Refrigerant Leak Detection

Refrigerant gas leak detection has become a high priority for many companies in this environmentally sensitive age, especially considering the increasing price of refrigerant gas, not to mention emergency service call-out costs to find, detect and repair leaks of HFC’s HCFC’s, plus the wasted man-hours that can be incurred.

Installation of refrigerant gas leak detectors is becoming an increasing concern in today’s workplace.

AquiTron™ refrigerant gas detection sensors are the product of the customer focus programme. Aquilar are fully conversant with BREEAM, BS-EN378-2016, ODS EC Regulations EC2037/2000 and F-Gas Regulation.

Aquilar offers two refrigerant gas sensor system options designed to suit the majority of applications across commercial and residential buildings. These systems are ideal for monitoring the extensive network of joints, valves and pipework found in air-conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration installations.

Sensors can operate as stand-alone devices or be fully integrated into existing Building Management Systems (BMS) or home automation platforms, enabling comprehensive local and remote monitoring. Refrigerant gas sensors (also referred to as FREON sensors) can also be incorporated into multi-risk leak detection systems that monitor for additional hazards, including liquid leaks from water and fuel systems, providing enhanced building protection.

Refrigerant gas Sensor System Options

AT-SRG Stand-Alone Refrigerant Sensor

The AT-SRGis a compact, stand-alone refrigerant gas sensor utilising advanced MPS electronic sensor technology. It can be deployed as a single unit or combined with multiple sensors to form a larger networked system.

Designed primarily for occupied spaces, the AT-SRG provides visual, audible and relay alarm outputs to ensure effective personnel protection and continuous gas monitoring. Typical applications include hotels, apartments, hospital bedrooms, offices, meeting rooms and server rooms to name just a few.

To support compliance with BS EN 378:2016, the AT-SRG can be connected to an optional AquiNet Fieldbus central monitoring system or one of the EcoLeak alarm panels, available in 1, 6 or 24 zone configurations.

AT-MSR Refrigerant Gas Detection Systems

The AT-MSR range is Aquilar’s advanced solution for refrigerant gas leak detection in commercial and industrial refrigeration and air-conditioning environments. Designed for rapid and accurate leak identification, these systems help reduce risk where refrigerants may pose a threat to both people and the environment.

Typical applications include, Refrigeration, air conditioning & Heat Pump plant rooms, Chiller plant rooms, Air handling unit plant rooms and voids, HVAC-R ductwork, Cold rooms, walk-in freezers, cold storage.

Manufactured in Germany by MSR Electronics, the AquiTron AT-MSR range combines high-precision sensor technology with robust alarm and control panels developed specifically for the HVAC-R sector. The result is a reliable, high-performance monitoring solution built for demanding applications.

Engineered to support compliance with BS EN 378, F-Gas legislation and BREEAM Pol 01, AT-MSR systems provide continuous protection for refrigeration plant. Clear visual, audible and relay alarm signalling ensures improved safety, reduced refrigerant loss and greater peace of mind for operators.

System Configuration and Integration

The AT-MSR range can be configured as:

  • A single stand-alone sensor
  • A compact system supporting up to three sensors
  • A larger network capable of monitoring up to 96 sensors

Sensors are powered directly from the central controller, which also provides visual, audible and relay alarm outputs. AT-MSR systems can be seamlessly integrated into control systems or BMS platforms using digital or analogue outputs.

Industry Insight

“It is estimated that companies could save as much as £40 million per year by reducing leakage levels on their refrigeration plant. Most commercial and industrial systems have numerous potential leakage points. You may not even be aware that your plant is leaking, let alone how much it is costing you.” Dept. of the Environment, Transport & the Regions.
