Regulatory Update
- The European Community (EC) has published a new regulation (2037/2000) on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This regulation came into effect on 1 October 2000 and is a replacement for the previous regulation 3093/94. The new regulation has a significant impact on the refrigeration and air conditioning industry within the EC (and for those entities who trade with the EC).
- CEN, the European Standards organization, has published a new standard, EN378: Refrigerating Systems and Heat Pumps—Safety and Environmental Requirements. This standard, in four parts, which came into effect in every EC signatory country by, at the latest, December 2000, replaces equivalent individual member states' standards. (In the UK, for example, it replaces BS 4434:1995, which has been withdrawn as a published standard.)
- EN 378 governs the selection of refrigerant fluids and permitted charge sizes for given applications (in terms of the occupancy classification) and details criteria for equipment design, construction/installation, and maintenance.
- EN 378 is harmonized with the European Pressure Equipment Directive.
